Keep our Villages Clean

January 1, 2018 5:31 PM

Fly-tipping on Canterbury Road near Sarre Dec 2017Villages report that fly-tipping and litter problems are important challenges to improving life in Thanet

49% of respondents to our Thanet Villages survey in December 2017 are rightly concerned that there is a big fly-tipping problem, particularly in the rural areas surrounding our villages.

Irresponsible dumping of waste takes place on the highway, lay byes and private land.

Fly-tipping cost Thanet District Council £109,550 to clean up last year.

Local Campaigner Angie Curwen says:

"There are rightly high penalties for fly-tipping but we need to put our heads together to understand fly tipping happens in order to eliminate it. It is well known that fly tipping is often carried out by individuals taking money to remove unwanted rubbish on behalf of a law-abiding person and then dumping it in an out of the way location."

Littering, fly-tipping and other environmental offences can be reported on the council's website, or you can e-mail: streetscene.enforcement@thanet.gov.uk and you can copy to Angie and the Lib Dem team at thanet-villages@eastkentcoastlibdems.org.uk
