Tom Brake MP at East Kent Coast Lib Dem dinner 8 Nov 2017Tom Brake MP warned of another 'snap' election in view of the inability of the Conservatives to reach agreement on a Brexit strategy at a dinner held in Broadstairs by the East Kent Coast Liberal Democrats last Wednesday 8 November.

Mr Brake, who is the Lib Dem spokesman on Brexit and international trade in the Commons, pointed out that no clear proposals had been put forward by the UK Government on the three key issues surrounding the leaving settlement, namely the final bill, the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, and the status of EU nationals living in the UK, all of which could and should have been done months ago.

In his discussions with representatives of different economic sectors in the UK, he said none believed we would be better off outside the EU. He was due to visit Dover to discuss the huge problems likely to arise at the border if, as seems increasingly possible, we leave the EU without an agreement.

The dinner was held at the Yarrow in Broadstairs, which helps young people to train and to gain experience in the hospitality sector. Introducing Mr Brake, the chair of the East Kent Coast party Martyn Pennington pointed to the serious social deprivation in Thanet compared with the rest of Kent, and emphasised the importance of schemes such as apprenticeships introduced by the Liberal Democrats during the coalition government.
