Lib Dems and UKIP lock horns over Europe at Hustings

April 30, 2015 11:04 AM

George Cunningham at hustings"Saying that Brussels somehow takes decisions without Britain is nonsense," stated Lib Dem North Thanet and Herne Bay Parliamentary Candidate, George Cunningham,on Monday evening (27th April) during a fierce Hustings debate at Christ Church and St Andrew's, Herne Bay.

Responding to the demand by Piers Wauchope (UKIP) that Britain exit Europe to safeguard its sovereignty, Cunningham countered that to leave Britain outside the decision-making process for rules in the Single Market, where more than half of Britain's trade goes, was simply not on.

"The EU's Member States ultimately control everything that happens in Europe, even in those areas where the European Commission has sole competence", he explained. "Pulling Britain out of Europe would risk the Single Market being taken in a direction which, in trade terms, would benefit other Member States rather than Britain."

On the panel for the North Thanet constituency Parliamentary Hustings, chaired by the Reverend Anthony Everett, and which drew an audience of around 200, was: George Cunningham (Liberal Democrat), Sir Roger Gale (Conservative), Frances Rehal (Labour) and Piers Wauchope (UKIP).
